About the Book | |
This is the third book of poems by retired consultant
psychiatrist G C Kanjilal, who found solace in writing poetry
following the death of his beloved wife Nana in 1989
after 34 years of happy marriage. On special occasions like Mother's Day, Easter, Christmas and their wedding anniversary,
he arranges twelve red roses in her favourite vase and displays them in the sitting room - hence the book's title.
He makes no apologies for the fact that some of the verses are sad, reflecting that "time is not a healer" and that he still loves and misses Nana as much as ever. He is also saddened and moved by the war in Iraq, September 11, 2001 and the Foot and Mouth Disease epidemic. A happier topical subject is the 17th Commonwealth Games, held in Manchester. He gains solace from the companionship of his Airedale dog Barnie, from the beauties of nature and the English country-side, from visits to Nana's native Germany and the support of his friends and family. This volume is dedicated to his late brother Dulal.

The author also has fun writing about the minutiae of life such as the red post-box near his home, sheep grazing beside the motorway and a bathroom power struggle between his toothbrush,
shaving soap and hair oil!
The previous two volumes are Who says you are there no more? and The Picture of Innocence.
