LOCAL people, buildings, landscapes and events are all depicted in this book of photographs published by the Weaverham History Society, nearly forty years after its long out-of-print fore-runner, ‘Old Weaverham – A Pictorial History’ saw the light of day.
As a voluntary project, Anne Loader, a member of the society, spent months working on the contents and layout of the book with committee member Peter Jennings, who sadly died before it was completed. The publication is dedicated to him.
‘Weaverham Revisited’ contains more than 160 pictures, maps and graphs. Thanks to computer enhancement techniques not available to the authors of the original pictorial history, Anne was able to restore many damaged or faded old photographs from the group's archives.
Several contemporary colour photographs are included too, illustrating how old landmarks or lost sites look today, and how the village is working to preserve its heritage.
Among the subjects covered are places of worship, farming, public houses, celebrations, sport, leisure, commerce, health and education. Picturesque ‘magpie’ buildings that have fallen victim to the bulldozer are also remembered. More recent events include the construction of the Owley Wood housing estate in the 1920s and the Memorial Orchard at Thorn Wood in 2016.
The Society’s mission is to bring local history to life, and it hopes that all those interested in Weaverham and its surroundings will enjoy this book.
